WINNIPEG, MB (PMAC-AMPC) August 20, 2007 -- Incorporated January 18, 2007, the intention of the Project Management Association of Canada / Association de Management de Project du Canada (PMAC-AMPC) is to become the Canadian national member association for the International Project Management Association (IPMA), the organization setting global standards for project management including competence development and assessment.
Currently, IPMA recognizes 43 member associations, each representing one national project management organization. We would like Canada to become the next IPMA member association.
Founded in Vienna in 1965, IPMA is the world’s oldest project management professional organization.
Over the years, IPMA has evolved from a discussion among a small group of pioneers in what was then the new discipline of project management. Those individuals decided to create an organization that would allow project management practitioners to learn, network and propose ideas.
Today, IPMA represents a worldwide professional association with more than 40,000 members in 44 countries. Its legacy includes the world’s leading certification program, global standards and the active promotion of the profession in both the business and government sectors. More information on IPMA can be found at http://www.ipma.ch/about/faq/Pages/default.aspx.
These member associations serve the specific needs of more than 30.000 project management professionals in their own country, their own language and their own culture. The role of IPMA is to serve those needs at an international level. Only by exception, when there is no member association in a country, is ‘direct individual membership’ possible.
IPMA provides leadership in the development of standards for the practice of the project management profession throughout the world. The IPMA Competence Baseline (ICB) provides standards and guidelines to define the work of the project management personnel with respect to knowledge, experience and personal attitude. Each Member Association can use the ICB to develop a more detailed National Competence Baseline (NCB) in conformity with local culture and specific circumstances. The ICB is the basis for validation of the national certification programs to the rules of IPMA.
Member associations such as Canada have to carry out their own certification program on the basis of their National Competence Baseline. IPMA only provides a universal system and validates the national certification program.
The philosophy of IPMA and its member associations is to achieve agreement by consensus and avoid the specified voting procedures whenever possible. The membership of the bodies reflects the broad international nature of IPMA.
What distinguishes PMAC-AMPC and our association with IPMA from other global project management organizations?

Capital Project Cost Control
by Morley Selver
Project cost control is a very important topic — even more important when the project budgets can often stretch into the hundreds of millions (even billions) of dollars and small mistakes can get magnified into huge problems. This DVD is a live recording of a webinar by Morley Selver, known as "The Project Doctor," who has over 30 years of real-world plant project engineering experience.
Selver has donated all author royalties from the sale of this DVD to the PMAC.
